NOT a blank check for big banks. =PLEASE SIGN ALL BELOW=

I am taking the unique step of writing to you from the Campaign for Fresh Air and Clean Politics, the parent organization of Voters for Peace, True Vote and Climate Security. The proposed bailout being considered in Washington, DC requires people to work together to stop it and replace it with a program that is transparent, protects the interests of the American people and requires that those who profited from the high risk financial speculation pay the cost of the clean-up. The bailout needs to be part of the revitalization of the U.S. economy not a blank check for big banks.

I just got off a conference call with more than 100 organizations from the peace, environment, labor, economic, civil rights and civil liberties communities. We are all coming together around a message of "Stop the Bailout." A panic has been put in place that is causing a stampede toward a questionable solution. The bailout is being proposed without any transparency. Americans do not even know why the bailout is needed or what financial institutions deserve taxpayer support.

And, the solution put in place has no independent oversight by Congress or the Judiciary - in fact, the bill specifically says that no judicial review of decisions is allowed, stating: "Decisions by the Secretary [of the Treasury] pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency."

There is nothing in the bill that would prevent the misuse or even theft of hundreds of billions of dollars. The bill essentially requires us to put blind faith in the Bush administration, especially Treasury Secretary Paulsen, the former CEO of Goldman Sachs who made hundreds of millions profiting from the financial industry.

We need to act now to slow Congress down and stop the panic.  Please take three steps:

    1. Click here and send an email to Congress.
    2. Call Congress now and urge your representatives to stop the bailout. Call 202-224-3121.
    3. Please copy/paste to email and send this to everyone you know. This is the moment when people need to come together and demand accountability from Congress, the administration and the financial institutions seeking a bailout.

700 "BILLION" WITHOUT "OVERSIGHT"??? WE'RE BEING "ROBBED"!! "AGAIN"

If we have learned one thing over the past seven years, it is this:  Do not EVER trust the Bush administration when the question of executive power is at issue! From the Patriot Act to the authority to use force in Iraq to the need to pass a new FISA law, the Bush administration is always saying some kind of crisis necessitates urgent action, which inevitably leads to the administration being given -- and abusing -- unprecedented power.

This week, the Bush administration is at it again.  With the specter of a complete Wall Street collapse hanging over our heads, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is seeking 700 billion taxpayer dollars to bail out the financial industry.  While the American Freedom Campaign is not taking a position on the financial details contained in the Bush administration legislative proposal, we are outraged by one specific section related to executive branch accountability.

Section 8 of the legislation provides, "Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency."

Yes, the Bush administration is asking Congress to give the Secretary of the Treasury the authority to spend $700 billion as he wishes, without any real oversight or accountability.  With respect to Congress, the proposed legislation requires the Secretary to merely submit reports about his activities starting three months after the first purchase of mortgage-related assets and semi-annually thereafter.  That's like giving a gambling addict your life savings and asking him to send you a postcard from Las Vegas every once in a while.

If you believe, as we do, that it is time for Congress to actually serve its constitutional function and guide and oversee the activities of the executive branch*, please click on the following link to send an email to your members of Congress.

    http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/2165/t/1027/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=25969

After you send your email to Congress, please be sure to forward this email along to friends and family. PLEASE HELP!!

PLEASE SCROLL DOWN AND SIGN ALL THE NEEDED PETITIONS. WE ""MUST"" STOP THIS RIP-OFF FOR OUR ""CHILDREN""!!

The scope of the contaminated Chinese infant formula scandal has widened =PLEASE SIGN=

The scope of the contaminated Chinese infant formula scandal has widened to include milk-derived ingredients. Some of these ingredients may have entered the United States for use in processed foods. Please ask the Food and Drug Administration to stop the import of dairy ingredients from China until this situation is under control.

While the U.S. doesn't import fluid milk or infant formula from China, we do import
milk-derived ingredients that are used in many processed foods such as cookies and chocolates. According to USDA figures, this year the U.S. has imported two million pounds of casein and other powdered milk proteins from China.  This includes 293,000 pounds that were imported in July, when some Chinese authorities were aware of the melamine contamination yet failed to act.

In order to protect their citizens, dozens of nations around the world are banning all dairy products from China. Please ask FDA Commissioner von Eschenbach to take similar proactive measures to protect American consumers.

    $700 billion Wall Street bailout =IT'S "YOUR" MONEY=PLEASE SIGN=

Thousands of you responded yesterday when I wrote. I'm writing to urge you to respond again. We are having an impact but it is going to take an avalanche of citizen input to re-think the bailout. The decision Congress is considering could affect us for a generation or even two.

One reported quote from an anonymous congressional staffer about the effect of our e-mails, phone calls, faxes, etc. indicates that support for the bailout plan in its present form is rapidly declining due to citizen pressure. The Congressional newspaper Roll Call reports:

"The Bush administration's forceful lobbying effort failed Tuesday to win support from rank-and-file Republicans or Democrats for a $700 billion Wall Street bailout package, though GOP and Democratic leaders still planned to move a bipartisan bill by the end of the week. . . .

"The rank and file in both parties expressed deep concerns about anything resembling the $700 billion that the White House wants, and leaders struggled to keep their Members open-minded in the face of surging outside opposition from a diverse range of voices from former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) and the Club for Growth on the right to liberal bloggers on the left. . .

"But both sides face heat internally, with liberals upset with what some see as a handout to Wall Street cronies and with conservatives who are appalled at the unprecedented intervention in the free market."

Confidence in US Banks Nosedives after Washington Mutual Collapse

    By Andrew Clark

The failure of the Seattle-based bank Washington Mutual undermined confidence in a fresh clutch of US household names today, as investors digested the implications of the biggest collapse of a high-street bank on record.

Bailout Can't Hide It - The United States Is Broke

    By Chris Powell

The bad-debt bailout would be the biggest government patronage program in history and would amount to declaring martial law over the U.S. financial system and economy. Even if such martial law is necessary, its implementation should be put in democratic hands - a non-partisan agency with full transparency, statutory standards for its purchases, and close accountability to Congress.

    By Ralph Nader

It's eerily reminiscent, when you listen to Bush yesterday, of how he stampeded the Congress and the country into the criminal war invasion of Iraq in 2003. I mean, look at all his statements: this could do this, this would do that, farms failing, small business, tada, tada. The first question we have to ask as citizens is, why is there a need for a bailout?

To the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President pro tempore of the Senate:

As economists, we want to express to Congress our great concern for the plan proposed by Treasury Secretary Paulson to deal with the financial crisis. We are well aware of the difficulty of the current financial situation and we agree with the need for bold action to ensure that the financial system continues to function. We see three fatal pitfalls in the currently proposed plan.

That's the larger-than-life elephant in the UN house: everybody knows that the end of the unipolar world is tied to the fact that Washington simply cannot continue to be a superpower financed by foreigners.

    Dear friends,

You watch as the stock market careens up and down. And you listen to Wall Street and Washington debate a possible $700 billion dollar bailout for financial institutions.

That's more than the Defense Department budget request this year! But the Senate can give you some relief from the financial distress that the big banks are inflicting on you. Tell the Senate it should include in any bailout the credit card proposal that passed the House yesterday!

The credit card legislation won't fix everything, but it will rein in the credit card banks and help level the playing field for you. Tell your Senators to vote yes to end abusive credit card tactics.

    Subject: Help save a life!

A man who is almost certainly innocent needs your help, and fast.

On Friday, September 12th, Troy Davis was denied clemency by the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles. It is imperative that we respectfully ask them to reconsider this unfortunate decision. They have to power to stop this indefensible execution and we must implore them to make the right decision.

Troy Anthony Davis was convicted of the murder of off-duty Savannah Police Officer Mark MacPhail in 1991. No physical evidence links him to the crime, and he has steadfastly maintained his innocence. His conviction was based solely on the testimony of witnesses. There was no other evidence against him. Since his trial, seven people who had previously testified against Troy changed the story they had told in court.

Some witnesses say they were coerced by police. Others have even signed affidavits implicating one of the remaining two witnesses as the actual killer. But due to an increasingly restrictive appeals process, none of this new evidence has ever been heard in court.

Can you take 30 seconds and help save the life of a man who is almost certainly innocent? You can learn more and take action here:

Drilling for oil and natural gas, and mining for coal is "NOT" a good choice!

    Dear friends,

Drilling for oil and natural gas, and mining for coal has already taken a dramatic toll on our country's public lands, wildlife habitat and natural resources.

Now, Congress is considering a proposal to develop a new dangerous energy source--oil shale-- for TWO MILLION acres of America's public lands!

Syncrude Oil Sands Mine, The Pembina Institute

Photo by Chris Evans, The Pembina Institute.

Oil shale extraction will yield impacts similiar to the syncrude oil sands mine in Alberta.

Please urge Congress to extend the moratorium on commercial oil shale development!

Oil shale production is 130% more carbon dioxide intensive than conventional drilling and gasoline production, which means it would continue to fuel global warming-the already single greatest threat to wildlife.

HERE'S WHAT ELSE IS AT STAKE:

    • OUR WATER: Oil shale production will require upwards of 315 million gallons of water a dayThis is scarce water we already need for drinking, agriculture, livestock and wildlife.

    • OUR WILDLIFE: Oil shale development would put at risk millions of acres of wildlife habitat, and continue to raise the harmful impacts of global warming pollution for wildlife and their habitats.

    • OUR WAY OF LIFE: Preserving America's public lands are an important part of our country's conservation tradition. Oil shale development threatens to dramatically change the face of some of our most treasured places.

Congress is moving in the wrong direction to break America's oil addiction.

Please ask your Members of Congress to be the difference that moves America's energy policies in a bold new direction.

"ANOTHER" multi-billion dollar GIVE AWAY of "YOUR" money!!

Today's disastrous economic headlines have been brought to you by Bush-McCain-style economic policies. They prove that an economy built on Wild West behavior without legitimate government oversight brings disaster.

Beyond the government bailouts of financial giants like Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and AIG, we need to restart our economic engine by fixing our real economy - where real people live and work.

We need immediate action by Congress to provide relief for working families, create new jobs and rebuild our economy from the ground up. The AFL-CIO is calling for fast-track congressional approval of a new economic stimulus plan that includes:

    • A moratorium on home foreclosures to allow for a restructuring of subprime mortgages.
    • Extended unemployment benefits for jobless workers.
    • Fiscal relief to states and funding for food stamps to make sure all Americans can provide for their families.
    • A jump-start for ready-to-go construction projects to repair schools, roads and bridges-construction that will help create good, family-supporting jobs in many communities where currently there are none.

Join us by calling your member of Congress today and tell them to take action:
    (202) 224-3121

We need to fix the real economy because families like yours remain our true economic engine. It is clear that our economic system is out of whack and we need to get to work fixing it right now, not just bailing out huge corporations.

Tell your member of Congress to pass a new economic stimulus bill that will help working families in the real economy as much as the speculative economy. We need to restart America's real economy.
