December 30 IMPEACHMENT UPDATE =PLEASE READ=HELP=
December 28 Cyrano's Best =MUST READS="Violated, dishonored, wading in blood, dripping filth - there stands bourgeois society. This is it [in reality]. Not all spic and span and moral, with pretense to culture, philosophy, ethics, order, peace, and the rule of law - but the ravening beast, the witches' sabbath of anarchy, a plague to culture and humanity. Thus it reveals itself in its true, its naked form."
--The Junius Pamphlet by Rosa Luxemburg
=================================================================================
"For individuals who are heads of bureaucracies-the State Department, the Defense Department, the National Security staff of the White House-they have a personal agenda to advance or expand the power of the US and to thereby add to their own status, their own prestige, their own political positions, their career c.v.'s, and various personal interests. That causes officials to push American power forward."

2. Shouting at the Devil: "Fuck You, Capitalism!" by Jason Miller
One of the idiocies advanced as a logical argument to justify the continued existence of the abomination of capitalism is that while it may be flawed, it is still better than any alternative. If capitalism is the best humanity can do, it's time to cash in our chips and leave Earth to our non-human animal counter-parts. They may not have opposable thumbs and formidably sized frontal lobes, but at least they don't engage in the systematic destruction of themselves and the rest of the planet.

3. The Shocking Disaster of Capitalism by Susan Rosenthal
Naomi Klein plowing through her research notes while writing The Shock Doctrine, an important book, but one that, as our reviewer shows, is marred in some significant respects. Klein, in the manner of so many liberals ("left-liberal" in her case)-is a far better diagnostician of the horrors and cynicism of capitalism than a therapist. Her curative recommendations fall way short of what needs to be done.

4. Rendition and the questions of Modernity by John Steppling
The real issue of the destruction of culture in North African countries (the film is shot in Marakesh, which I know only because I've spent some time there) isn't touched, nor the dynamics between colonial powers and the colonized populations isn't really addressed. This is simply more cheap psychologizing and a way to mystify the real political analysis such a story requires. The same thing goes for how the US is portrayed - it's only a temporary aberration, this new policy of rendition, and soon we will correct it and the Empire will work smoothly again.

5. Socialism or barbarism? by Alex Miller
One of the most famous writings in the history of socialism is the Junius Pamphlet, written by German socialist Rosa Luxemburg in 1915 while she was in prison for opposing the first world war.....Obviously, many things have changed in the world and in the socialist movement in the 90 years since the beginning of that war. But some things have stayed the same. Take Luxemburg's descriptions of capitalist profiteering on the war: "Business is flourishing upon the ruins" and "Profits are springing, like weeds, from the fields of the dead". Who could think of a better description for the plunder of Iraq by the likes of Bechtel and Halliburton?

6. Congressional Shame and Duplicity by Stephen Lendman
Blame it on Congress and the 110th Democrat-led one that was elected to end these practices but just made them worse..and there's still 14 months to go to the term's end with plenty of time left to vaporize Iran and end the republic if that's the plan.

7. Amazing Grace by Charles Sullivan
"We Americans are the product of free market ideologues, religious zealots, and vulgar experiments in social engineering. We are being led to slaughter, and to be slaughtered, by dark and foreboding forces bent on the destruction of all that is decent, just, and beautiful."
http://www.bestcyrano.org/THOMASPAINE/?p=421
8. Ron Paul Reality Check by Joel Hirschhorn
Paul clearly recognizes the many failures of the federal government. Maybe as a member of Congress he just does not have the courage to confess that he too has been part of a long-standing refusal by Congress to obey Article V of the Constitution. Why don't passionate Paul supporters see his lack of integrity, guts and consistency?

9. "WHY TORTURE?" by Steven Jonas
First and foremost, it is a major instrument of terror against one's own population: it is a really good repressor of dissent. A principal tool of Gestapo control in Nazi Germany was to pick up someone who had been making mildly anti-Hitler remarks, give them a good session or two of torture and then send them back to the neighborhood. You can bet the neighbors got the message.

10. The Elders by Adam Engel
Haven no heaven. Stink of piss. Lemon cleanser. Mothballs. Time a damp fart in slow air. Reality small real-estate. The Body domicile of ghosts, spun-out spiders, rusty pipes. A ticking bomb. Wind through pores of crinkly skin. Small pleasures of walking. The Elders don't produce. Neither work, nor children. Sure, The Past - "but what have you done for me lately?"

Dear friends, We need your help to bring Ríos Montt to justice. The Guatemalan government is opposing the release of past military files which are believed to contain information essential to the prosecution of the judicial cases against former president General José Efraín Ríos Montt and other former officials. This is an especially important time to take action, as Ríos Montt is preparing to once again take an official seat in the Guatemalan Congress. Guatemala's Supreme Court of Justice can remove Ríos Montt's parliamentary immunity if they believe there are enough reasons to suspect him of a crime; the evidence thought to be contained in the military files could therefore be crucial in challenging his immunity. Take action to bring Ríos Montt to justice. Just last month, AIUSA released Justice Without Borders, a documentary film about the global movement for international justice and accountability. Featured in this film is the story of Rigoberta Menchu's and other survivors' campaign to bring Efraín Ríos Montt and other former officials to justice. We've set up a new group to coordinate impeachment efforts among members: the The Nationwide Movement to Impeach Cheney and Bush. Come join us! Joining the group will allow you to harness Facebook's outstanding viral capacities to quickly spread information about impeachment far and wide. Our new community organizer, Jacob Park, would like to ask you to do two things: 1. Go to the group page, click on SHARE, and then click on POST. This will post the group to your Mini-Feed so that all your friends can see it. Then invite at least ten of your friends directly (and tell them to invite at least ten friends). 2. Check the group page regularly. He's going to be posting a lot of action ideas and event listings but I don't want to spam you with invites and messages all the time. There will definitely be actions that you can do and good events near you. Here are some more ideas: 1. Post a pro-impeachment message on the Facebook sites of Members of Congress. Typically you have to click "support this politician" and then you can write on their wall. Here's the message I posted - you can use it as a guide but please don't copy it or it will look like spam.
Leadership: they need to put the impeachment of Dick Cheney on the table!

IMPEACHMENT =WHY "NO" NEWS???=Legal Dispute with broadcast mediaSubmitted by vigilante on June 29, 2007 - 7:13pm.
THE MEDIA CONSPIRACY MUST BE CHALLENGED AND STOPPED AND ONLY A FEDERAL LAWSUIT CAN REMEDY THE MEDIA. The official act by an elected Representative of filing Articles of Impeachment mandated by the United States Constitution, Article II Section 4, is a very rare and important event. The failure by the mainstream broadcasting media to report this official act has prevented the public’s right to be informed on an issue that imperils the democracy by preventing the freedom of speech guaranteed by the First Amendment. The potential controversy expected by an impeachment process is now completely missing while not one of the five (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and CNN) broadcasters have mentioned the Articles of Impeachment official filing on April 23, 2007. Precedent statements by the Supreme Court demands litigation such as, “It is the right of the viewers and listeners, not the right of the broadcasters, which is paramount….It is the right of the public to receive suitable access to social, political, esthetic, moral, and other ideas and experiences which is crucial here.” The Fairness Doctrine safeguarded the public’s right to be informed on issues affecting democracy, while also balancing broadcaster’s rights to the broadest possible editorial discretion. When broadcasters conspire to prevent the public from being informed on an issue that affects democracy, specifically the impeachment of the Vice President for purposely manipulating incorrectly the intelligence used to preemptively attack Iraq and misuse his media power to lead America into war -- a vivid line needs to be drawn. To draw this line, only a federal lawsuit can be the remedy. The body of law that is necessary to convince the court that this media conspiracy exists, in fact, needs to be read and analyzed correctly. Then a complaint must be filed. The work load required to read 1st Amendment cases that will establish the rule of law necessary to prevent the media companies from summarily having its case dismissed will consume time. The case must survive to the deposition phase to establish the evidence that the defendants conspired to prevent the public from knowing that Articles of Impeachment were in fact filed on April 23, 2007. The job of getting to that hurdle is critical. From that point of deposing the editors and producers who conspired to prevent the public from being informed will be easy. If the impeachment blackout was an actual coincidence and not a conspiracy, the defendants would be eager to be deposed to set the record straight. After all it is the stock in trade of each media company to have its audience believe they are hearing the truth even if the truth is not “fair and balanced” and even if the news is not “fit to print”. NEW ACTION ALERTS =CHANGE=For the past three years the Philadelphia council of the Boy Scouts of America has resisted the city's request to change its discriminatory policy toward gay people despite threats that if it did not do so, the city would evict the group from a municipal building where the Scouts have resided practically rent free since 1928. Municipal officials said the clash stemmed from a duty to defend civil rights and an obligation to abide by a local law that bars taxpayer support for any group that discriminates. This week the Boy Scouts made their last stand in court and lost in what civil liberties advocates call a major victory for anti-discriminatory policies. Congress easily passed the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007, but President Bush vetoed the bill. The legislation would have ended the ban on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. More than 72% of Americans support embryonic stem cell research as well as an overwhelming majority of our nation's top scientists and academics. This research has the potential to fundamentally transform our ability to combat some of the worst diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and diabetes. Call on your Senators and Representatives to recruit a veto-proof majority for this bipartisan measure. An estimated 25 million Africans are currently living with HIV/AIDS, and about 2 million people on the continent die of the virus every year. Behind these incomprehensible numbers are millions upon millions of real lives, individual stories, and relationships permanently altered by the preventable disease. Join the movement to curb this epidemic by joining this change and seeing what you can do to help. The largest of the great apes, the gorilla is among our most endangered species. December 23 UPDATE: "IMPEACHMENT" =GOOD NEWS=PLEASE SIGN=Wexler Petition Hits 100,000 But 13 Judiciary Dems Remain Silent
Wexler is thrilled with your response, and he will hold a virtual town hall meeting on Thursday at 9 pm ET (6 pm PT) on Florida Progressive Radio with Kenneth Quinnell, co-hosted by Democrats.com. Wexler has the support of two Judiciary Committee Democrats, Luis Gutierrez (IL-04) and Tammy Baldwin (WI-02). Five others are co-sponsors of H.Res. 333/H.Res. 799, Rep. Kucinich's Articles of Impeachment for Vice President Cheney: Steve Cohen (TN-09), Keith Ellison (MN-05), Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18), Hank Johnson (GA-04), and Maxine Waters (CA-35). But that leaves 13 Judiciary Committee Democrats who have NOT called for impeachment hearings. These 6 voted to send Kucinich's bill to Judiciary on 11/6, so they should publicly support Wexler's efforts: John Conyers (MI-14), Bobby Scott (VA-03), Brad Sherman (CA-27), Betty Sutton (OH-13), Mel Watt (NC-12), and Anthony Weiner (NY-09). These 7 voted to kill Kucinich's bill on 11/6, so they need to CHANGE their positions and fulfill their oath of office to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign AND domestic: Howard Berman (CA-28), Artur Davis (AL-07), William Delahunt (MA-10), Zoe Lofgren (CA-16), Jerrold Nadler (NY-08), Linda Sanchez (CA-39), and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-20). Please email all House Judiciary Democrats through this petition: If you are represented by any of the 13 Democrats listed above, please join your local Congressional District Impeachment Committee (CDIC) and plan local actions like letters to the editor, district office visits, birddogging, honkathons, and collecting petitions and personal letters on the streets: December 22 URGENT: STOP THE WIRED ACT =PLEASE SIGN=With all the critical legislation that must pass before Congress breaks for the holiday you would think that the Senate sponsors of the "Wired" Act, namely Sen. Kennedy (D-MA), and Sen. Enzi (R-WY), would keep the total destruction of our health privacy at the bottom of the list. This does not appear to be the case. Patient Privacy Rights and so many allies have been working with the Senate to add the privacy protections in Senator Leahy's amendment to the Wired Act. Without these protections, the Wired Act will actually make the HIPAA Exposure Rule even worse, giving additional corporations legal rights to our private health records -- without our consent and over our objections. We don't understand why is it so difficult to get our right to control our most personal, private, health information included in this law. What elected official would stand up at a town hall meeting and tell their voters "I don't believe you have a right to control your personal health records. I believe it is more important for employers, drug companies and the health and insurance industry to get what they want, when and how they want it"? Remind the Senate that YOU are their PRIORITY. This may be the last chance Senators Kennedy & Enzi have to pass Wired this session. Congress must hear from us loud and clear that we want to our health records to be private. Tell your Senators to object to putting the Wired Act on the consent calendar for a fast vote and to oppose adding the Wired Act to the annual Medicare reimbursement bill or any other must-pass bill. STOP "ANOTHER" BUSH COVERUP!! =Please contact your Senators=The Bush Administration is trying to cover its tracks - and it's up to our Democratic Majority in Congress to stop them. The Administration wants us to pass a law to grant immunity to any phone company that participated in President Bush's secret domestic spying program. The CIA now admits it destroyed video tapes showing agents using torture to interrogate suspects. Torture is illegal, and covering it up is a crime too. It's obvious this Administration thinks it's a law unto itself. They don't trust the American people with the truth. That's unacceptable. Demand the truth from President Bush: President Bush doesn't accept the rule of law, and apparently the phone companies don't either. With their help, the Bush Administration secretly spied on Americans for years, without any court orders or oversight. Now the president wants Congress to grant retroactive immunity to companies that broke the law at his bidding. President Bush claims that American lives will be lost unless Congress changes FISA. He also says he'll veto any legislation changing FISA unless it includes immunity for the phone companies. So if we take the President at his word, he's willing to sacrifice American lives to protect phone companies! Who's next? The private contractors they've let run amok in Iraq? The airlines they use to take suspects to other countries where torture is legal? Enough is enough is enough is enough. Tell President Bush our laws apply to him too - and anyone who helps the Administration violate them:
President Bush's secret domestic spying program showed nothing but contempt for existing law, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, the bipartisan law that Congress passed and President Carter signed 29 years ago. As Jack Goldsmith, who led the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel in 2003 and 2004, recently said:
The Bush Administration has no respect for the rule of law. Is it any surprise that he and his administration have lost the trust of the American people? From illegal spying intelligence to willful destruction of evidence, I refuse to give this president any benefit of the doubt. Stand with me:
Thank you for your support. December 21 UPDATE: IMPEACHMENT +NEWS+UPDATE: IMPEACHMENT =IMPORTANT=
By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writer Fri Dec 21, 8:03 AM ET WASHINGTON - The Bush administration has made its position clear in legal filings and now gets a chance to say it to a judge in open court: Hold off on inquiring about the destruction of CIA videotapes that showed suspected terrorists being interrogated. U.S. District Judge Henry H. Kennedy ordered the hearing Friday over the objection of the Justice Department after lawyers raised questions about the possibility that other evidence also might have been destroyed. Kennedy, appointed to the trial court by President Clinton, is considering whether to delve into the matter and, if so, how deeply. The hearing marked the first time that administration lawyers were to speak in public and under oath about the matter since the CIA disclosed this month it destroyed the tapes of officers using tough interrogation methods while questioning two al-Qaida suspects. Kennedy is presiding over a lawsuit by Guantanamo Bay prisoners who are challenging their detention. The judge had ordered the government not to destroy any evidence of mistreatment or abuse at the Navy base in Cuba. Because the two suspects — Abu Zubaydah and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri — were being held overseas in secret CIA prisons, however, they are likely not covered by the order. The tapes could be covered by a more general rule prohibiting the destruction of any evidence that could be relevant to a case. For example, if the tapes showed Zubaydah discussing any of the detainees in Kennedy's case, their destruction could have been prohibited. Lawyers for both sides have filed classified documents regarding the tapes. That means there is a good chance Kennedy already knows whether the videos are relevant to his case. If the judge believes the CIA destroyed the tapes to keep them from being used in court, he could side with the detainees' lawyers and order the government to disclose all the evidence it has collected, including any other evidence in addition to the tapes that has been destroyed. He could order government officials to testify in court about the tapes, which were created in 2002 and destroyed in 2005. The government has strongly urged against this move, saying it would disrupt a joint Justice Department-CIA investigation into the tapes. In court documents, acting Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey S. Bucholtz was concerned that Kennedy might order testimony that "could potentially complicate the ongoing efforts to arrive at a full factual understanding of the matter." A congressional investigation is under way too. The CIA invited Capitol Hill investigators to the agency's Virginia headquarters Thursday to begin reviewing documents and records relating to the videotapes. Kennedy could side with the Justice Department and agree there is no evidence the government acted improperly and, therefore, no reason to order anything else. Or he could say he lacks the authority to act because the videotapes were not related to his case. Kennedy was as a federal prosecutor during the Nixon and Ford administrations until he was named a federal magistrate judge in 1976. President Carter appointed him to be a judge in the District of Columbia's courts and Clinton named him to the federal bench. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ HERE'S WHAT TO DO: That's the only gift i want this holiday season -- or how about a measly Hearing on House Resolution 333? December 20 OUR STINKING LOUSY VOTING SYSTEMEvery once in a while you see a Frankenstein monster of a house on a suburban street. The original structure might have a bumped-out second story too heavy for its foundation, an addition that looks tacked on, a sunroom around back meant for a different place entirely. And that's before you even get to the gazebo. From a commonsense standpoint, the whole thing is a mess. That's the equivalent of the American election system, at least if you added a couple of cars on cinder blocks in the side yard. Piecemail, arbitrary, even downright wacky, turning the nation's most important task into a jerry-built mess. The first time Mao met Nixon, the Chinese leader said he'd voted for him. The way we pick a president is so random the big guy might almost have been believed. The official season kicks off with a rite so arcane that even many of those participating don't understand it. The Iowa caucuses are like evening coffee klatsches with a serving of trigonometry. Those who show up at one of the state's 1,784 precincts huddle in various corners of the room depending on whom they're supporting. Then the folks in each "preference group" are counted and the math begins: multiplying that number by the number of delegates allotted to a precinct, then dividing by the number attending the caucus. Or at least I think that's right. Even veterans admit confusion, and tutorials are routinely offered. Keep that in mind when you hear the deceptively straightforward news that a candidate won in Iowa. Caucus participants like to talk about how it's participatory democracy at its grittiest, but they represent a very small sliver of voters, since lots of people don't have the time, the patience or perhaps the computational skills to participate. In 2004 about 125,000 Iowans took part, and naysayers complained that that wasn't representative of Iowa, and Iowa wasn't representative of America. Ditto New Hampshire, whose primary follows and which, like Iowa, is not particularly representative of a new, more polyglot America. A former speechwriter for Dick Gephardt, whose presidential ambitions once turned to dust in these early contests, wrote of the aftermath, "One-half of one per cent of the nation's Democrats will have decisively shaped the race." That speechwriter, Matthew Dallek, proposed a national primary or a series of regional primaries instead. It's a notion that dovetails nicely with the hobbyhorse of a professor of political science at NYU, Steven Brams, who has long promoted a method called approval voting. This might be his year, since on both sides of the political spectrum many voters seem to be persuaded—or unpersuaded—by more than one candidate. Approval voting would let them reflect that on their ballots, choosing any and all of those they would find acceptable. Torn between Huckabee and Romney, Clinton and Obama? Approval voting would allow you to put a check next to both names. Brams argues that this would elect the candidate most acceptable to the largest number of voters, instead of the one beloved by one segment and despised by another. It would also allow special-interest voters to have it both ways, since they could cast a statement vote for a third-party candidate as well as a strategic vote for a front runner. So far, approval voting is used mainly to elect the officers of such organizations as the Mathematical Association of America, and Brams admits he has an uphill slog: "Politicians are risk-averse." How else to explain their continued allegiance—or inertia—in the face of our quaint 19th-century election customs? Oregon and Washington were free-thinking enough to institute voting by mail, and Texas and Georgia allow ballots to be cast in advance of Election Day at polling places. But most other states still require voters to show up in person on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Why? The fall harvest, silly. The beginning of November was when the crops were in but roads were still passable, and Tuesday gave those coming in buggies from outlying towns plenty of time to attend church on Sunday before their departure. Which means that today Tuesday voting makes even less sense than Daylight Saving Time. December 17 EFF ALERT: =PLEASE SIGN=Almost two years ago, EFF filed suit against AT&T for its
illegal participation in a massive digital dragnet of Americans' private communications. In recent months, the Bush Administration has been pressuring Congress to immunize telecommunications companies against this litigation. Just a few months ago, immunity seemed like a forgone conclusion. But last month, outcry from thousands of concerned citizens like you changed the tide, when the Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill that didn't let lawbreaking telecoms off the hook. Unfortunately, a previously-reported version of the bill that grants telecom immunity will be presented to the Senate on Monday morning. This vote is our chance to strip immunity from the bill.
